What is the origin of the name Curbstone?
For nearly two centuries, securities were traded in New York City outdoors on the sidewalks, by "curbstone brokers". This difficult environment meant that only the hardy survived. In 1921, when these brokers moved inside, each trading station was marked with a lamppost like those on the street, a reminder of the brokers' past. This was the origins of the "New York Curb Market", which later became the American Stock Exchange. The traditions set by these hard-working curbstone brokers is reflected in the financial management services provided today by members of Curbstone Financial Management Corporation.
